Welcome
The Canadian Confederation celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2017. On this occasion numerous major events took place in several cities across Canada. An important part of the Hungarian presence is the Hungarian heritage, as well as the outstanding scientific, cultural, economic, and other accomplishments that contributed to Canada’s development during the past 150 or so years.
The first Hungarians arrived in Canada in the province of Saskatchewan in the 1880’s, and since then more Hungarians immigrated in several waves, contributing to Canada’s prosperity. The Hungarian heritage in Canada is rich and significant, and we can rightly be proud that many Hungarians brought fame to Canada in the agricultural, cultural, scientific, political, and business life.
This important anniversary has highlighted that the Canadian Hungarians’ accomplishments and work are present in many areas of our lives, and yet we know very little of them because we are lacking a comprehensive collection that could showcase this valuable contribution for a wider public.
For this very reason, in 2017 the Embassy announced an initiative to compile the Canadian-Hungarian values, in which both private citizens and Canadian-Hungarian organizations participated. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their valuable contribution. Based on this website, a publication is in the works that will be sponsored by the National Cultural Fund. As a result of all that work, this website showcases several dozens of Hungarian memorabilia – in many categories, with pictures and descriptions – that can be found throughout Canada. However, our work is far from over, as most likely many Hungarian-related treasures are still missing from this list, but could further enrich the collection.
