One of the first documented Hungarian settlements in Canada, Kaposvar was founded in 1886. The Roman Catholic Church is the only stone church in Saskatchewan, it was built in 1906 and 1907. It was regarded by Hungarian Catholics in Western Canada as their spiritual centre. Kaposvar used to be an important pilgrimage location. While initially successful, the township lost many of its inhabitants to the neighbouring Esterhazy in the first half of the 20th century. Today, Kaposvar is a part of Esterhazy and operates as a National Historic Site, offering tours of its Roman Catholic church, rectory, cemetery, and pioneer house. The Embassy of Hungary donated a commemorative plaque paying tribute to the first Hungarian settlers.
